 Q&A with Annabel Gutherz

In this Q&A, Annabel shares insights into her musical journey, creative inspirations, and what’s next on her horizon.

If you could describe your new album in three words, what would they be, and why?

I’d describe my new album as heartfelt, warm, and diaristic. Each word captures its essence—heartfelt reflects the emotions poured into every note, warm conveys the sense of comfort and connection I hope it brings, and diaristic speaks to the lyrics and their deeply personal nature. It’s like crafting a home for my most intimate thoughts and inviting listeners to step inside.

Can you share the story behind “Dance Around It”? What inspired the lyrics and its themes of love and fragility?

“Dance Around It” is my love letter to those fleeting, beautiful moments we hold so dear. It reflects the bittersweet harmony of joy and vulnerability—cherishing deep love while knowing it may not endure. The song reflects that universal experience of treasuring the present while facing the uncertainties of tomorrow. It’s a bittersweet reminder to embrace love fully and fearlessly, even when it is delicate.

The song seamlessly blends classic rock and modern pop. How did you approach merging these genres in your music?

It was such a joy to blend these two sonic worlds with my producers, Mikal Blue and Bret “Epic” Mazur. I naturally gravitate toward acoustic, organic textures, which Mikal brought to fruition with his expertise. Together with some truly phenomenal musicians, we built a lush, analog foundation that embraced classic rock sounds and paradigms. Bret then layered in modern pop elements, using synthetic tracks and contemporary production techniques to create a seamless fusion!

What do you hope listeners will feel or take away from “Dance Around It”?

I hope listeners feel seen and understood when they hear the song. If it resonates with them, I want it to provide comfort and remind them that they’re not alone in navigating the complexities of love and vulnerability.

How has your sound evolved since you first started making music?

When I first started making music, I was captivated by the creative process of getting inspired by an array of genres, which gave my music an amorphous and exploratory quality. As my artistry evolved, I was better able to hone my craft and my sound to create a style that feels authentic to my heart and emblematic of who I am. My music now feels more intentional and true to my voice!

What themes or stories are you exploring in your current work that excite you the most?

I’m most excited about exploring the duality of emotions we often feel at the same time. Life is rarely straightforward, and I love diving into those moments of happiness mixed with trepidation, hope paired with doubt, or love intertwined with vulnerability. It’s in these emotional complexions that I find the most inspiration, and I try to include those dynamics in every story I share through song.

Do you have any personal rituals or routines that help you stay creative when making new music?

I don’t have a set routine, but I find a lot of inspiration from exploring samples on Splice, which often spark melodies or ideas I wouldn’t have imagined otherwise. I also draw from personal experiences, the world around me, the world beyond me, and other art forms like poetry or visual media. These different sources keep my creativity well nourished!

What’s one thing about you that your fans might not know but would be surprised to learn?

I think my fans might be surprised to learn that I’m the author of a children’s picture book through a social enterprise I started years ago called Annie’s Pajammies!

Where do you see your music going in the next few years? Are there any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon?

It’s certainly a challenge to predict where my music might venture in the next few years, but wherever it goes, my greatest hope is that it reaches peoples’ hearts, builds community, and helps listeners find emotional companionship. I want my songs to be a safe space where listeners feel seen and understood. I’m working towards my sophomore album right now, and collaborating on exciting projects I’m eager to share with others! Thank you so much for having me! I am filled with gratitude!
