Based in Toronto, Canada, with international roots, Derev blends atmospheric layers, complex rhythms, and raw emotion into every track. Their sound is an innovative blend of progressive rock and traditional Middle Eastern music.

Released just in time to build hype for their 2025 tour (including a stop in Edmonton on May 10 at Rendezvous Pub), Troubled Mind solidifies Derev’s place in the growing landscape of progressive and post-metal. Drawing from cultural roots and existential themes, this record is both deeply personal and defiantly political — all wrapped in swirling instrumentals, heavy riffs, and haunting vocal layers.

Derev’s New Album Troubled Mind

Derev has always prided itself on blending complex musicality with raw lyrical content, and Troubled Mind is no exception. The band poured their souls into every second, not only as musicians, but as storytellers.

Five people sitting, holding and displaying identical albums titled "Derey: Troubled Mind." Background features framed art on wall. Smiling mood.

At its core, Troubled Mind is a rock album perfect for fans of the bands Opeth, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Soen, and Riverside. Each track represents fragments within a troubled mind.

A Reflection of Their Heritage

What sets Derev apart in the progressive metal space is their rich cultural infusion. The band’s Armenian and Middle Eastern influences bleed into their melodies, adding another layer of depth and intensity. These aren’t just songs; they’re reflections of the band, steeped in identity, resistance, and survival.

Band members with signatures on a black background. Next to it, a surreal maze with an eye, cover art saying "DEREV" and "TROUBLED MIND".

And despite the heavy themes, the album doesn’t wallow. It pushes forward. It’s about the strength to carry on even when your thoughts betray you. It’s about confronting a broken world and daring to scream back.

Final Thoughts on Toronto Local Band

With Troubled Mind, Derev has delivered an intense, reflective, and masterfully layered album. It’s a must-listen for rock fans! Whether you’re deep into local rock bands or just beginning to explore the genre, Derev offers something unique. Their rock resonates with audiences on numerous levels.
