Background music makes the entire experience much more immersive for the audience. “But even so, music in games and even movies have a propensity to blend into the background and become an inextricable part of a greater whole. Sometimes you don’t really know what you’re missing until you turn it off,” Writes Kellen Beck , a writer from Mashable . Take Star Trek for example. There were dozens of sound effects and background noises that added to the look and feel of the world and to the overall storytelling. Consider all the science fiction you’ve ever watched. The noise of the doors to the bridge on Star Trek, Star wars lightsabers during a duel, the blaring alarms and the whoosh of Star Gates are all highly recognizable sounds. but that’s not all they’re highly recognizable sci-fi sound effects. • Interview With Notedead

Are you ready? Are you sure you’re ready for this? We don’t think you are, but you better get ready. Switching Styles has the answers you need with this interview with Notedead . Introductions All Around! Max Preuss (drums) and Trymer Martin (guitars/vocals) combine to form the band, Notedead. It all started where all great bands start, with a passion for music. The band found their start during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic, despite the hardships. Everything was rough. That didn’t stop them. For Notedead, this was a new beginning. The band formed in 2020 and has been rocking the world since. Q&A Between Switching Styles and Notedead! In an interview with switching styles, they’ve opened up about their band, their process, and their goals. Read below to get to know Notedead even better! What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?  Music emits emotion. I long to feel what the artist felt when they wrote the song and kind of experience it together. Music is also everywhere, from malls to elevators. And rhythm is in footsteps and your heartbeat, it’s everything.  The emotions a song can put you through makes me feel alive How did Notedead start and how did the Covid 19 Pandemic impact your band?  Early on in Covid times when everything stopped and when we couldn’t jam with our bands Trymer started writing his own stuff and asked Max to write drums along with it. We both quickly realized that our writing for our respective instruments clicked together. We started ripping out songs super-fast, so we decided to continue writing under our own band together which is Notedead. How is being an Edmonton-based band impacted Notedead?  It’s funny because only half of the band (Max) is Edmonton based and the other half (Trymer) is from Lacombe so it’s almost a long-distance type band relationship.  The local music scene in Edmonton has a great group of people who support and encourage us, and we are forever grateful. What inspired you to start playing and making music? Trymer:  Before I got into my own music I listened to my dad’s classic rock/metal, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Foreigner, ZZ Top, etc. Anyways but I’m in grade 5 I had some project to do at school and there was another classmate who did his project, but his was on Sum 41 and it caught my eye, so I got the CD “all killer no filler” at a Walmart in Manitoba, and that cd changed me. From there I adopted my first taste of music away from my parents and it inspired me to want to play guitar, the ball started rolling from there! Max: Rock band. I loved the game because I was able to some of jam along to my favorite songs while simultaneously learning a basic version of the drums. I got very good at that game, and it made my transition into real drums very easy. My music teacher in junior high band class then asked if anybody knew how and I volunteered to learn some percussion. The rest is history, between drum lessons, drumming for my high school jazz band & winning jazz artist of the year, it’s safe to say I’m a real drummer now What bands or genres inspire your sound?  Counterparts, Napoleon, Dance Gavin Dance, to name a few… but it’s really so hard to say what inspires our sound, so many bands growing up shaped us into the musicians we are and what our preferences are as well. We also use it a lot! Of dead notes haha Describe your creative process when you write new music.  We both write our music on Guitar Pro. being as we are far away from each other, and we both enjoy the punctualness we can read. Trymer usually comes up with the first riff and then sends it to Max and Max writes the drums and then we work together from there, writing the song section by section. Sometimes there will be a pre-discussed idea before we start on our next track, but we always write song by song and never add too much to our plates. What’s your favorite venue for performing? Why?  We don’t play shows as we are only a 2 man band writing songs to share with people, but if we could Trymer would want to play the St. Andrews United Church in Lacombe as he used to play local punk shows there growing up (it’s kind of odd I know, but it was so much fun!) and Max wishes we could play at Polar Park Brewery in Edmonton but it unfortunately just closed down. What are some of your current projects?  Currently, we have some new music in the bank but nothing to confirm aside from our new album “Separate Paths”. However, Max is in 2 other bands, Withered Days and Sol Runner. What advice would you give to musicians just starting?  Listen to music as often as you can. Find something that you wish you could make your own and take that drive to make your own with your inspiration and feelings  Don’t give up, you’re going to suck at times, but music is a lifelong partner if you let it be. Is there anything you wanted to mention that I didn’t ask about?  Yes, our new album ‘Separate Paths’ is out September 9th

  • 60 Decades of Singer Songwriters

This Op-Ed piece on “60 Decades of Singer-Songwriters” was brought to you by our guest writer, Jason Greiner. This Op-Ed by Jason Greiner reflects on six decades of singer-songwriters, emphasizing the rich contributions from artists in the 1960s and 70s like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. While acknowledging a perceived decline in this genre’s lyrical depth, Greiner highlights notable figures from subsequent decades, including Prince and Kurt Cobain. In modern times, he suggests that Taylor Swift’s earlier works and artists like Rob Thomas and Ed Sheeran are helping revive the singer-songwriter style. Ultimately, he expresses hope in discovering more talented singer-songwriters, despite noting the genre’s current challenges in maintaining quality and meaning. 60 Decades of Singer Songwriters Photo by Tima Miroshnichenko on In the 1960s and 70s, plenty of great music was made by talented musicians. And one aspect of that era was the concept of the singer-songwriter. Artists like Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen come to mind, among many, many others. It was a time known for people who could both perform and write their own lyrics with eloquence, depth and precision in an almost poetic style.  Some may argue that the next couple of decades were lacking in this skill set. If you are of that mindset, I can certainly understand your point. However, one can argue that some artists still fit the bill.  I’d have to say you could place Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and U2 in that 80s group from my early childhood. As for the 90s, two up-and-coming alternative artists fit the mould in Jewel and Alanis Morrisette. After all, Jewel even had a book of poetry called “A Knight Without Armor” published in 1999 and Morrisette became widely acclaimed for her masterful use of “stream of consciousness” lyrics. And many would go as far as to say that Kurt Cobain, one of the pioneers of the grunge genre out of Seattle, had a gift for songwriting that was far beyond that of the average band’s lead singer.  Since the early 2000s, it would be hard to question that this particular art has fallen off a bit. We now live in a world that is more filled than ever before with cookie-cutter pop songs that often lack any real depth or meaning. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of love for songs and musicians from the last 20-plus years. But most of it just doesn’t apply when you are talking about the singer-songwriter style.  That being the case, I would say there have been a few. While some might scoff, I would say the earlier songs written by Taylor Swift could stand up to the scrutiny of those seeking quality lyrical work. I emphasize that this would be her earlier stuff, not that from the last 8 years or so. I’d also say that some of the work by Avril Lavigne has a bit of a poetic quality even though she is mostly known as a pop-punk artist. But above all, the two who really seem to be reviving the notion of the singer-songwriter a bit would have to be Rob Thomas, soloist and lead singer of Matchbox Twenty, and Ed Sheeran.  Examples of Singer Songwriters For a little clarification, let me share some examples of some of the quality and meaningful lyrics from a few of the artists I mentioned. Jewel – Lyrics for “Hands” If I could tell the world just one thing It would be that we’re all OK And not to worry ’cause worry is wasteful And useless in times like these I won’t be made useless Won’t be idle with despair I’ll gather myself around my faith For light does the darkness most fear “Hands”Song by Jewel Alanis Morisette – Lyrics from “Thank U” “How ’bout getting off of these antibiotics How ’bout stopping eating when I’m full up How ’bout them transparent dangling carrots How ’bout that ever elusive kudo Thank you India Thank you terror Thank you disillusionment Thank you frailty Thank you consequence Thank you, thank you silence” “Thank U”Song by Alanis Morissette Rob Thomas – Lyrics from “3 AM” She believes that life is made up of all that you’re used to And the clock on the wall has been stuck at three for days, and days She thinks that happiness is a mat that sits on her doorway But outside it’s stopped raining “3AM”Song by Matchbox Twenty Ed Sheeran – Lyrics from “The A Team” And they say She’s in the Class A Team Stuck in her daydream Been this way since eighteen But lately her face seems Slowly sinking, wasting Crumbling like pastries “The A Team”Song by Ed Sheeran Final Thoughts Regarding Singer Songwriters I look forward to learning about more talented singer-songwriters and while the style has been on the decline, it’s nice to see it is still going, even if only to a small extent.  Photo by cottonbro on Jason Greiner  is the author of several books and eBooks and has worked as a professional in the field of journalism and blogging. • Getting Started with Tips; LARP For New Players

Being new at anything is complicated and daunting. This article dives into tips when it comes to LARP for new players. Introducing LARP For New Players Starting as a new player in a LARP game can be just as daunting but it’s easier than you’d think. Let’s start with an introduction to what LARP is. LARP is an acronym that means live-action roleplaying games. These are immersive games with similar storytelling to traditional role-playing games such as D&D, pathfinder, gamma world and so on. However, there’s one major difference. It’s live. In traditional roleplaying games, the player creates a character within the specifications of the game rules and plays to that character’s thoughts, actions, and progression. However, in a LARP game, this is done live-action. During the game, you act out the motivations, and actions, roleplaying what your character would do in any given situation. You chose at the moment how to respond to the innkeeper asking you your business. Or you’d have to dodge an arrow shot by an angry hobgoblin that’s probably insulting you in under common. Or even you’d be able to bond with your new best friend, a dark elf paladin that makes the best smores. From combat to diplomacy to adventure to friendship, there are all kinds of situations to advance the characters’ storyline. No matter where the thrill of adventure and imagination can be found. There’s a story for everyone in a LARP game. Photo by Juliana Stein on How Does One Get Started In LARP? – Step By Step Instructions Getting started with LARP can be a very daunting task even for the most enthusiastic gamers. There is an immense amount of information to absorb and contextualize at any time. LARP organizers are there to facilitate; reaching out to them is easier than you think. One – Find A Game That’s of Interest and Logistically Possible. Two – Contact the Game’s Organizers or Website to Begin Your Character Creation Three – Create the Persona Form Paper to Flesh Four – Connect with Other LARPers That Attend That Event to Learn More About It or Bring a Friend. Five – Get Your Gear and Costuming Six – Pack A Back, And Plan for Food Seven – Time to Adventure and Have Fun. • Introducing Refuge LARP Calgary

Live Action Role-playing is a wonderful way to enhance practical skills, social skills, and overall creativity. One example close to home is the Refuge LARP out of Calgary. What is LARP? LARP or live-action roleplaying is an immersive game with the storytelling of traditional role-playing games such as D&D, Pathfinder, Gamma World and D6. Photo by Lisha Dunlap on Like traditional roleplaying games where one creates a character within the specifications of the game rules, and plays out that character’s thoughts, actions, and phrases. However, in a LARP, it’s merely live action. This means that you act out the motivations, and actions, roleplaying what your character would do in any given situation. From combat to diplomacy to adventure to friendship, there are all kinds of situations to advance the characters’ storyline. No matter where the thrill of adventure and imagination can be found. There’s a story for everyone in a LARP game. Introducing Refuge LARP Calgary “Being a Hero is what LARP is all about,” explains the organizers , “Take on a role as a daring fighter, a dashing rogue, a powerful scholar casting magic or a combination of the three!” The LARP website explains, “Our story focuses on our players as high-fantasy heroes pitted against seemingly insurmountable odds. Many times, they are victorious, but other times, well, that remains to be seen.” LARP or Live Action Role Playing Games are an immersive roleplaying game played in person instead on paper. Refuge LARP Calgary is one of the longest running campaigns in Alberta. Starting the LARP in 2011, they’ve gained quite a following for the immersive fantasy game. The Story of the Game The story that’s the background for all roleplaying within the game is based on the mythical land of Calandonia. About the size of Europe theoretically, it provides a huge level of exploration for the characters. This land is the main area for game play and the most prominent of the world’s realms. It’s the seat of power. There’s an overarching storyline with many different facets. There are many ways to engage with the storyline. From simple encounters with a goblin in the woods to more intricate engagement with the arch mage and grand council. The political ties between them makes it even more interesting including arch mage, grand council, and the Dwarven Enclave to name only a few of the participating rulers. • Introducing And Reviewing Jackie Enavcho

Introducing And Reviewing Jackie Enavcho is an article guest written by Jason Greiner Photo by les entremaliades on If you are a fan of “America’s Got Talent” from way back, you may recall a talented young lady with a brilliant operatic voice at only 10 years old. And you may recall this little girl finishing as the runner-up in that completion in 2010. If not, let me introduce you to Jackie Enavcho. While Evancho has done some incredible things, much of her success has come quietly. To date, she has released 8 studio albums. Twice Evancho has been on Billboard Magazine’s list of  “ 21 Under 21: Music’s Hottest Minors ” and she was named to Forbes Magazine’s “30 Under 30: list for musicians. A total of 6 of her albums have reached Number 1 on Billboard’s Classical Charts and she holds the record for being the youngest solo artist to go platinum.  While it may be a big statement, her vocals seem to feel like something of generational talent, something you will only find a handful of times in a lifetime. While it may sound like I’m blowing smoke here, this would put her on par with pure, classic singers like Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand for example.   Her newest venture is “Carousel Of Time,” an album available for preorder on her website  jackieevancho.com and Amazon . This recording will feature her crossover-pop cover of “Both Sides Now” by the legendary Joni Mitchell. You can see the video on her official YouTube channel .  Let Jason know what you think in the comments below!! This content was sponsored by Notedead . Thank you for supporting local music blogs like Switching Styles!! Article Contains Paid Content. Learn more Are you sure you’re ready for this? Are you ready for truly hardcore music? We don’t think you are, but you better get ready. Notedead is one of the most hardcore bands in the province, and they’re not stopping any time soon. Introductions The band formed in 2020 and has been rocking the world since. They’ve been releasing music since their debut in 2021 with the release of their Best Wishes EP. Then the single “ Labyrinth ” was released a year later. Max Preuss (drums) and Trymer Martin (guitars/vocals) combine to form the band, Notedead. It all started where all great bands start, with a passion for music. Despite the hardships, the band found their start during the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic. The covid pandemic was a tough time for Canadian musicians. Venues were closed. Live performances were limited. Finances for everyone were rough. Everything was rough. That didn’t stop them. For Notedead, this was a new beginning. Getting Started. Trymer started writing instrumental tracks solo during the quarantine. Channelling the pressure, uncertainty, and anxiety into the melodies, he created three of Notedead’s first songs. But something was missing, and that something was Max. As a drummer, Max had felt the impact of the pandemic firsthand. Trymer reached out and Max took to his role like a fish to water. They both quickly realized that their writing was an amazing match. That’s the exact moment that Notedead was created. You may think you know the post-hardcore genre, but not like this. Max is a drummer, not only for Notedead but also for Withered Days and Sol Runner . His skill combined with Trymer’s artistry makes entirely unique music. This band brings something fresh to the post-hardcore genre. The band is inspired by classic rock and metal legends; Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Foreigner, and ZZ Top. That’s not all. Notedead’s influences also include contemporary bands such as Counterparts, Napoleon, and Dance Gavin Dance. Notedead is breathing a new kind of life into the genre with its music. “A dynamic, immersive, and progressive assimilation of heavy influences. Rangy guitars work that balances urgent and melodic astutely and a pummeling vocal delivery intertwines deftly with the instrumental unit” Raves Katie from Carry The 4 PR. Their Music This post-hardcore Canadian band is bringing out all the stops in their music. Notedead is bringing forth impressive drums, emotive lyrics, and an emotional connection to each one of its listeners. All their music has such a profound level of depth to it. Each note, each strum, and each word have a meaning and a purpose. That purpose is to connect with the listener within that moment. Their most recent release is an album called “ Separate Paths .” This album of 11 hardcore songs has been available as of September 9, 2022. Not even one of the album’s songs is flat when it comes to emotions. The songs all tell a story of humanity and share a part of the human condition. Pain, anger, joy, rage, and misery, it’s all there in their music. Notedead is aiming to be one of the greats coming from right here in Edmonton, Alberta. The goal was never to impress people. It never has been. It’s been about the music. The real goal is to write great music that speaks to the human heart. Find their music online on Apple Music , Spotify , YouTube , and Bandcamp . Check them out and let us know what you think!!

Hugging them regularly reminds them that they’re essential to you. Remember that your dog has preferences too! Each dog has different needs when it comes to contact. Make sure that the cuddles you’re giving are ones they want to get. Look for signs that they don’t enjoy the hugs or cuddles, such as getting stuck, symptoms of anxiety, avoiding eye contact, whining, barking, yawning, ears down and back, Squirming or trying to get away, which are all signs that they want their space. If your dog doesn’t care for hugs, try belly rubs, back scratches or just a hand on their head instead. • National Share The Love Day; Ways To Combat Social Isolation

Photo by Elle Hughes on Did you know that today is National Share the Love Day? The pandemic has made it more challenging to share affection with loved ones. Although the pandemic has settled down in terms of Canadian restrictions, folks still hesitate to go out. Statistics Canada published the Canadian social survey for August and September of 2021 . They reported that more than 1 in 10 Canadians are always or often lonely. That’s a lot of loneliness for one country. That means in a single high school class of 30 kids, at least 3 of those kids are feeling lonely. In an average downtown Edmonton office of 120 people, 12 of your coworkers feel lonely most of the time. It’s a sad statistic, but there are things that you can do! “Socialization is important because touching and talking to people is a natural cure for anxiety and depression,” said  Dr. Asim Shah , Professor And Vice Chair in the  Menninger Department Of Psychiatry And Behavioral Sciences  At Baylor explains to Homa Shalchi , a writer for Baylor, College Of Medicine . Isolation doesn’t just make you feel lonely, though. The negative impacts of isolation and loneliness can increase the risk of mental health issues (depression, anxiety, substance abuse) and chronic conditions (high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and dementia). Ideas to Celebrate Friendship! Happy National Share The Love Day!! There are ways to socialize even during and after a pandemic. Switching Styles is based in central Alberta, on the enduring homelands of many Indigenous Peoples, including the Beaver, Big Stone Cree, Cree, Dënéndeh, Ĩyãħé Nakón mąkóce (Stoney), Kelly Lake Métis Settlement Society, Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis, Lheidli T’enneh, Michif Piyii (Métis), Mountain Métis, Niitsítpiis-stahkoii (Blackfoot / Niitsítapi), Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, Tsuut’ina, ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐤ ᐊᐢᑭᕀ Nêhiyaw-Askiy (Plains Cree), Woodland Cree, and many others. As a Canadian music platform, we recognize that the arts exist within broader systems shaped by colonial history. Colonial policies and practices deliberately sought to suppress Indigenous cultures, traditions, and songs. We acknowledge this history and its ongoing impacts of colonialism. We are grateful for the opportunity to share music and culture on these lands, and we commit to ongoing learning, accountability, respect, and meaningful action.

We commit to supporting Indigenous voices and ensuring that Indigenous music, stories, and cultures are protected, amplified, and never erased.
