Edmonton’s alt-metal band Famous Strangers has taken a bold step forward with the release of their new music video for “Deepstar.” This track, originally released in 2024, marks a significant moment in the band’s creative evolution. After two years of anticipation, the cinematic video finally brings the song’s cosmic story to life, offering fans a deeper connection to the band’s unique sound and vision.

A celestial figure stands on Earth, surrounded by electric patterns in space. The word "DEEPSTAR" glows above in a cosmic setting.

The Story Behind “Deepstar”

“Deepstar” began as a personal reflection by vocalist Amanda Kiernan. She wrote the song inspired by her friend Mileena, capturing the feelings Mileena’s presence evokes. Amanda explains that the song grew beyond a simple tribute, “I started writing this song literally just describing my friend Mileena, how she makes me feel, and how her presence feels in the room. It all came together so perfectly when I added all the space and healing. The world needs a hero, and I put those two together… it just happened, flooding the paper like some epic extraterrestrial being. What’s even better is that she agreed to be Deepstar and be in our video. We are honored and blessed to have her.”

Guitarist Jeff Kittlitz shares how the music came together naturally. Experimenting with his new Fractal FM9, he found a tone reminiscent of classic rock giants like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. “Deep Star came together quickly and organically. While exploring presets on my new Fractal FM9, I landed on a tone that instantly brought to mind classic Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, and the main riff came together almost immediately. Once I brought it to Beej, the song fell into place fast and gave Amanda plenty of space to write. It was one of the first songs the four of us created together. During recording, the ending evolved in the studio, and we loved it so much we kept it. It was one of those moments that proves the magic that happens when everyone’s locked in. At its core, it’s a straight‑up rock song," Kittlitz explains.

Production Quality and Sound

The single “Deepstar” was mixed by Juno Award winner Phil Anderson, known for his work with Econoline Crush and Garth Prince. The mastering was handled by Maor Appelbaum, whose credits include Limp Bizkit, and Dream Theater. The video’s long-form format enhances the song’s narrative, using visuals to deepen the cosmic themes. This approach invites viewers to experience the music on multiple levels, combining sound and imagery to create a powerful artistic statement.

Why “Deepstar” Matters

“Deepstar” is more than just a song; it represents a milestone for Famous Strangers. It captures the band’s growth and their ability to blend personal stories with expansive, cosmic themes. The video release not only celebrates this achievement but also invites listeners to explore the emotional depth and creative vision that define the band.

For fans of alt-metal and atmospheric storytelling, “Deepstar” offers a fresh and compelling experience. The combination of heartfelt lyrics, classic rock influences, and modern production creates a sound that is both familiar and innovative.

What to Expect Next

With the release of the “Deepstar” video and the upcoming show, Famous Strangers are poised to expand their reach and connect with new audiences.

“Deep Star is coming. This was the very first song we ever released, and the video has been two years in the making. We’re fired up that it’s finally unleashed. A dark cosmic tale of a woman from space sent to save our doomed souls. Massive thanks to Brad Thompson, Mileena Kombat, and Shade Nightclub for helping summon this beast," Kittlitz adds.

Listeners can look forward to future releases that continue to push boundaries and explore new creative territories.
