- Jeffrey James: A Candid Conversation On Fake Suede And Musical Evolution
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Jeffrey James has always embraced transformation. With a career that spans multiple genres and high-profile collaborations, James has built a reputation for creating innovative and deeply emotive music. He’s introducing the world to his latest project, Fake Suede —a bold and refreshing fusion of 70s disco, soul, indie rock, and modern synth-pop. In this exclusive Q&A, James discusses his inspirations, the creative process behind Fake Suede, and what fans can expect from this exciting new chapter. Q&A with Jeffrey James We sat down with Jeffrey James to discuss his latest project, Fake Suede, and the creative journey behind it. What inspired you to create FAKE SUEDE? The idea for FAKE SUEDE has been living in my head for a while now. The music inspirations for it are what I grew up listening to. Finally, mid-last year, I had a session with producers William Leong and Jackson Wise. That song became “Celebrate (Night with Me).” That was the first time I thought, “Yes, that’s it! That’s the sound of FAKE SUEDE. ” It was a perfect jumping-off point. What’s the meaning behind the name FAKE SUEDE? The name is an homage to the cultural and aesthetic vibes of the late ’60s and early ’70s and the musical influences that FS pulls from that era. I also wanted to acknowledge the present indie rock influences, along with a little nod to my own constant state of imposter syndrome. How does your approach to songwriting differ between FAKE SUEDE and your solo work? I purposefully put more constraints on my FAKE SUEDE project because I had a very specific sound in mind. I’ve always found that restrictions when making art can lead to some of my most exciting and unique works. I wanted to see how far I could chase that. FS has also allowed me to get out of my own way when it comes to what I thought my older work needed to sound like. What has been the most rewarding part of working on the FAKE SUEDE project so far? Being able to step into a brand new artistic persona has been my favorite part of this project so far. It gives me the chance to use a very specific part of my personality while creating a new musical and visual world, starting from the ground floor. Can you tell me about the character Quint? If you enjoy animation, the FAKE SUEDE pseudo-mascot is Quint (Quintessence). He’s an anthropomorphic heart drawn as a 1920’s rubber hose-style cartoon (think of the OG Mickey Mouse). He’s in all my song visuals and he may be my favorite non music creation. His story grows with each new song. Can you explain more about the concept of Quint (Quintessence) and how he evolved as a character? Quintessence is a word derived from medieval Latin: Quinta Essencia. Or Fifth Essence. An essence that was thought to connect everything. I thought that was a perfect personification of what I was trying to convey with my music. Quint chose his own name once I realized he was meant to be heart-shaped. In the same way that I think all art is already floating in the ether, waiting for us to find it and bring it into the “real world,” Quint was already excited and was waiting for FAKE SUEDE to find him. Why did you choose the specific style for Quint? I love rubber hose animation. It somehow portrays a feeling of innocence and simplicity, while also giving me an uneasy and creepy vibe (which I love). It makes me want to keep watching to see what happens next. I hoped fans would get the same feeling. Could you tell us more about the visual storytelling aspect of FAKE SUEDE and how it complements your music? I wanted to find a way to bring extra emotional and visual depth to the music without limiting it to images and video of myself. The idea is to let the listener find their own meaning behind the different visual and musical combinations. By utilizing this character, Quint, it helps me expand the world of FAKE SUEDE in more abstract and sentimental ways than is usually possible for an indie artist. What kind of interaction do you hope fans will have with Quint outside of the music? Quint’s journey keeps evolving with every new song and step of this project. The possibilities are absolutely endless. All that to say, he will grow and change with the music and with the fans who want to interact with him. How does Quint’s journey relate to the personal journey of the listeners who connect with your music? I hope listeners see a bit of themselves through Quint’s journey, and are able to bring his ideals into their own lives. How would you describe the sound of FAKE SUEDE, and where do you see it going in thefuture? FAKE SUEDE has a soulful and retro-nostalgic feel, while staying grounded in modern lyrical and sonic ideals. I’m always chasing the perfect combo of retro meets modern. So the songs will grow towards wherever that leads me. What’s the story behind “Love Don’t Come Easy”? The song is a combo of my own experiences in dating and what I’ve seen so many of my friends go through, while trying to find the right person. Navigating love and relationships is hard, and unfair, and rewarding, and worth it. How do you feel this track fits into the larger narrative of the FAKE SUEDE project? “Love Don’t Come Easy” is much more personal and intimate than my first two singles, which have more uptempo, feel-good vibes. For this song, I pulled less from my disco and indie influences and more from acts like Smokey Robinson and Bill Withers. I think it helps FAKE SUEDE feel like a more well-rounded project. How does it compare to other singles you’ve released? This is the first ballad song I’ve released for the FAKE SUEDE project. And it’s much more personal than the general feel-good vibes of my first two singles. What do you want listeners to take away from the song? Everyone goes through the same struggles and ups and downs of dating. That doesn’t make it easier, but I find it cathartic and a bit lighter to deal with, knowing that we’re not alone in our journey to find a soul mate. What’s the most challenging part of blending different genres in your music? The challenge is always to find your unique sound and voice anytime you are writing a song. I’m always trying to pull from my contrasting influences like Bill Withers or Tame Impala while adding my own musical experiences and taste. The balance is the goal. Do you ever get writer’s block? How do you overcome it? I get writer’s block all the time! Sometimes I try to at least write out the cheesy lyrics and/or the lyrics that I know are wrong. Then I give it some space and time before I come back to the song and rewrite it. That usually helps me see the song in a new light. Life experiences help a lot as well. The more life I live, the more I have to write about. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to songwriters trying to find their sound? Write as many songs as time and your brain will allow. The next song might be the best song you’ve written, but the one after that might be even better. We all start out mimicking our idols, but the more we create, the more our own tastes come to light. And the repetition of writing and writing and writing is how you breakthrough to find what your unique sound is. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned about the music industry? No one is waiting for your music. You have to find ways of proving that you belong. What’s next for FAKE SUEDE after this single? I have a LONG list of FAKE SUEDE songs waiting in the queue. It’s just a matter of timing as to when I release which song. But more music is coming! Where do you see yourself musically in the next five years? If I was making this same music in 5 years, I would be very happy Any final message for your fans? Thanks for listening! Looking Ahead Jeffrey James’ commitment to reinvention and artistic exploration is what sets him apart. With Fake Suede, he has created more than just music—he has built a rich, immersive world where nostalgic sounds meet modern sensibilities. As he continues to push creative boundaries, fans can expect an exciting journey filled with soulful melodies, thoughtful storytelling, and a touch of visual magic. - Vampire Love Songs: Exploring The Enchantment Of Immortal Romance
Vampires have held a firm grip on our cultural imagination for centuries, but it’s their intersection with romance that truly fascinates. From forbidden love to eternal devotion, these bloodsuckers have inspired countless stories and, in turn, playlists that celebrate their dark allure. Today, we’re diving into the reasons why vampire romance is so irresistible and highlighting a curated playlist of songs to satisfy your gothic heart. Photo by cottonbro studio on Vampires in Media: A Timeless Romance From the pages of classic literature to the screens of modern media, vampires challenge societal norms and risk their immortal existence for love. The vampire’s literary journey began long before Bram Stoker’s iconic Dracula (1897). In Heinrich Marschner’s opera Der Vampyr (1828), vampires are depicted as figures of doom and tragedy, capturing the darker aspects of human nature. The literary vampire first appeared in 18th-century poetry and became a staple of gothic fiction with John Polidori’s The Vampyre (1819), inspired by a tale from Lord Byron. Subsequent works, like Varney the Vampire (1847), introduced a more sympathetic portrayal of vampires, while Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872 ) explored themes of desire through a lesbian vampire. Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872) was one of the first works to explore vampirism with a female protagonist, breaking ground in themes of gender, sexuality, and power within gothic literature. Comparatively, Bram Stoker’s seminal work Dracula (1897) established the conventions of the modern vampire mythos, blending horror and seduction. The late 20th century saw a shift towards more nuanced characters in works like Moto Hagio’s *The Poe Clan* (1972–1976) and Anne Rice’s *Interview with the Vampire* (1976), which examined vampires’ psychological struggles and moral complexities. Overall, the evolution of the vampire in literature reflects changing cultural anxieties and continues to resonate with audiences through themes of fear and empathy. Stoker’s Dracula cemented the vampire’s place in the literary canon and inspired early cinematic masterpieces like Nosferatu (1922), which introduced the now-classic vulnerability to sunlight. Over time, vampire portrayals have evolved, reflecting societal shifts and cultural contexts. By contrast, modern narratives such as Twilight, Queen of the Damned, Buffy the vampire slayer, kiss of the damned, bit me, only lovers left alive, what we do in the shadows, near dark, Underworld, the lost boys, Interview with a vampire, and True Blood romanticize vampires as symbols of passion and forbidden love. The Eternal Allure of Vampire Romance What is it about vampire love stories that enthrall us? The answer lies in the rich interplay of universal themes—passion, danger, and eternal devotion. “The main answer you would see if you looked up “Why are vampires so popular?” is sex appeal, and that’s indisputably part of it. That has been part of the appeal of vampires for a long time, as writers paint vamps as suave, mysterious, and often beautiful, and bloodlust tends to read similarly to plain old lust.” Explains Sarah Fisher, a writer for Trinitonian. Sex Appeal Frequently depicted as enigmatic, attractive, and dapper, vampires’ bloodlust is akin to typical human lust. Their indulgence and dependence on their partners are two characteristics that make vampires romantic. The vampire is a symbol that represents the attraction of the forbidden, the perilous, and the otherworldly. The contrast between the mortal, defenseless human and the vampire’s immortality and strength creates a dynamic of danger and desire. Otherworldliness Vampires are often depicted as having an otherworldly energy and pale skin, which lends them a seductive mystery. These creatures of the night are shrouded in allure, and their dangerous charm is undeniable, as portrayed in films like *Interview with the Vampire* (1994). The complex and intimate relationship between Louis and Lestat explores themes of love and companionship within a chilling, seductive context. This enigma makes vampires the perfect romantic antiheroes. Forbidden Love Vampire romance often hinges on the forbidden. These creatures exist on the fringes of human society, challenging conventional norms by their very nature. Stories like Twilight vividly portray this dynamic as Bella and Edward navigate a love that defies the boundaries of life and death. The tension of this taboo creates an irresistible emotional charge, drawing audiences into their world. Eternal Devotion Few concepts are as romantic as the promise of eternal love. Vampires, with their immortality, offer the ultimate fantasy: a love that endures beyond the limits of time. In the 1992 adaptation of Dracula , Dracula’s centuries-long yearning for Mina embodies the poignancy of an eternal bond, intertwining tragedy with deep passion. Primal Fears and Desires The predatory nature of vampires speaks to primal human instincts, intertwining fear with desire. Their strength and invincibility contrast with their vulnerability to sunlight or a wooden stake, creating multi-faceted characters. This duality makes them compelling avatars of human emotion—at once powerful and fragile. Loneliness Despite their allure, vampires are often portrayed as lonely figures, cursed to roam the earth in solitude. Their relationships are profoundly poignant, as love becomes a rare refuge from their eternal isolation. Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire poignantly explores themes of companionship and the emotional toll of immortality, offering a nuanced perspective on their existence. Playlist: Songs For Vampire Romance Enthusiasts The themes of eternal love and forbidden desire have inspired countless musicians to create music fit for a vampire cuddle session. - Love Don’t Come Easy: A Groove-Infused Journey Through Romance
Fake Suede’s latest single, Love Don’t Come Easy , is a fresh yet nostalgic take on the ups and downs of modern romance. Jeffrey James once again proves his knack for blending heartfelt storytelling with rich, soulful soundscapes. This time, instead of the high-energy, danceable vibes of his previous hits— Celebrate (Night with Me) and Don’t Mind If I Do) —he slows things down, diving deep into the complexities of love and relationships. A Soundtrack for the Heart From the first notes, Love Don’t Come Easy pulls listeners into a lush, immersive soundscape. Inspired by classic ’70s soul, the grooving bassline sets a smooth foundation for the track. Layered guitars and dreamy synths build an equally retro and modern atmosphere. It’s a song for dimly lit dance floors, long night drives, and moments of reflection. James’ velvety vocals shine, carrying the weight of the song’s emotional depth with effortless charm. At its core, Love Don’t Come Easy is about the realities of love—not just the butterflies and fireworks, but the patience, effort, and resilience it requires. James draws inspiration from personal experiences and friends’ stories, crafting lyrics that feel honest and universal. “Navigating love is hard, unfair, rewarding, and worth it,” James shares. “I find it cathartic knowing that we’re not alone in our journey to find a soulmate.” The lyrics strike the perfect balance between vulnerability and relatability, making the song resonate deeply with anyone who has ever loved, lost, or fought to keep a relationship alive. A Standout Performance James’ vocal delivery is the heart of the song. His voice glides smoothly over the retro-infused beats, effortlessly switching between moments of tender reflection and powerful emotion. There’s an authenticity to his performance that makes Love Don’t Come Easy feel deeply personal while remaining widely relatable. Musically, Love Don’t Come Easy is a melting pot of influences. Fans of legends like Smokey Robinson and Bill Withers will appreciate the track’s warm, soulful feel. Meanwhile, those who love the dreamy, psychedelic touches of artists like Tame Impala will be drawn to its modern production. The result is a timeless and fresh song, a testament to Fake Suede’s ability to fuse past and present seamlessly. Final Thoughts Love Don’t Come Easy is a glowing addition to Fake Suede’s growing discography. It doesn’t just showcase James’ vocal talent—it highlights his ability to craft songs that linger in the mind long after they’ve ended.
- Q&A With Caroline Romano: The Raw Emotion Behind Her Music
In the ever-evolving world of alt-pop, few rising stars shine as brightly as Caroline Romano . With a unique blend of heartfelt lyrics and genre-defying melodies, she has quickly captivated listeners with her authentic storytelling and bold sound. Having recently released her emotionally charged single “IDK These Days,” Caroline is preparing for the release of her highly anticipated EP, How The Good Girls Die. Her music explores themes of self-discovery, vulnerability, and the complexities of youth while showcasing her growth as an artist. Q&A With Caroline Romano We had the opportunity to sit down with Caroline to discuss the inspiration behind her latest work, her creative process, and what fans can expect from her future releases. Below is an interview between the alt-pop musician Caroline Romano and Switching Style’s very own Dylanna Fisher. What inspired the creation of “ IDK These Days “? “IDK These Days” was inspired by a conversation I had with my mom last year. She asked me how I was doing and I didn’t have an answer at the time. It was a season of life where I felt chaotic, boring, angry, anxious, and apathetic all at the same time. It was really a confession to myself and to her that I wasn’t doing the best, and I think acknowledging that was a big step in helping me feel better. What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from this single? I hope “IDK These Days” resonates with anyone who has ever struggled to make sense of their own emotions. One of the most frustrating parts of dealing with depression and anxiety, for me, has been not always understanding why I feel the way I do. There’s a loneliness in that mindset that exacerbates all of those negative emotions. My hope is that listeners take away the reassurance that it’s okay to feel that way—those feelings don’t define you, and they certainly don’t last forever. With “IDK These Days” now released, how does it set the tone for your upcoming EP – How the Good Girls Die? It definitely sets the tone for what I feel is a very reflective project! There’s this element of internal spiraling that occurs more and more with each track on the EP, and I think “IDK These Days” plays a critical role in the internal monologue of this project. How the Good Girls Die is such a striking title. Could you share the story or theme behind it? Thank you! There’s a song on the EP called “How The Good Girls Die,” so the EP title came from that. I had an idea for a song that served as sort of a cautionary tale to my younger self. It’s a very dramatic way of describing my previous experiences navigating life and relationships in my early twenties. How would you describe the essence of this EP in just three words? Messy, honest, and volatile. How does How the Good Girls Die differ from your previous releases, both musically and thematically? Both musically and thematically, How The Good Girls Die reflects my growth—both as a musician and as a person. In many ways, it feels like a blend of my last two projects. It still carries the same stream-of-consciousness writing style, but with more concise delivery. Overall, I think it’s a good reflection of how I’m feeling at 23. Were there any tracks on this EP that posed unique challenges—or brought unexpected rewards—during their creation? It was really difficult to figure out sonically where I wanted to go with the title track, “How The Good Girls Die.” I originally wrote it on acoustic guitar, and it had an almost folk-y tempo to it. However, when I revisited it months later, I turned it into the piano-driven ballad-like version it is now. It was hard to get it right though. There was a fine line between adding too much or not adding enough on what is both a very dramatic yet simple song. We deliberated a lot about the elements of this song, but I’m really glad it turned out the way it did. It really feels like a title track now. After the release, what can fans look forward to—any tours, collaborations, or upcoming projects you’d like to share? I’ve been working on new music to follow this EP, and I’m so excited about it! I love continuing to write this ongoing story of my life through these projects, and I think this EP sets things up for a really great next chapter. I’m absolutely hoping to play more shows than I ever have before this year. It’s in the works, but one of my biggest goals this year is to go on tour again! What excites you most about the direction your music is taking this year? I’m excited because this new music feels like a departure from anything I’ve released before in so many ways. My songs evolve with me, and I love that I get to capture these new parts of my life in three-minute snapshots. I can’t wait to see where this year takes me and the stories I’ll get to write as it happens. If you could give your younger self one piece of advice—about music or life in general—what would it be? I’d tell the younger version of me to be confident in the things I was once most insecure about. It feels so obvious, but it’s so so important. I’ve found that parts of myself I once tried to hide or diminish are things that have helped me the most—both in my music and in my personal life. I often wish I would’ve accepted the oddest parts of myself at an earlier age. It really is about believing in yourself and staying true to you. Conclusion: With her distinctive voice, fearless songwriting, and expanding catalog of unforgettable music, Caroline Romano is undeniably an artist to watch. Her upcoming EP, How The Good Girls Die, promises to bring even more raw emotion, genre-defying sound, and powerful storytelling. As she continues to evolve both personally and musically, there’s no telling where her journey will lead her next. For now, fans can anticipate the release of her EP, her upcoming performances, and the promise of even more exciting music to come. If “IDK These Days” is any indication, Caroline Romano’s future is nothing short of extraordinary bright. Each word captures its essence— heartfelt reflects the emotions poured into every note, warm conveys the sense of comfort and connection I hope it brings, and diaristic speaks to the lyrics and their deeply personal nature. It’s like crafting a home for my most intimate thoughts and inviting listeners to step inside. Can you share the story behind “Dance Around It”? How has your sound evolved since you first started making music? When I first started making music, I was captivated by the creative process of getting inspired by an array of genres, which gave my music an amorphous and exploratory quality. My music now feels more intentional and true to my voice! What themes or stories are you exploring in your current work that excite you the most? It’s in these emotional complexions that I find the most inspiration, and I try to include those dynamics in every story I share through song. Do you have any personal rituals or routines that help you stay creative when making new music? I don’t have a set routine, but I find a lot of inspiration from exploring samples on Splice, which often spark melodies or ideas I wouldn’t have imagined otherwise. I also draw from personal experiences, the world around me, the world beyond me, and other art forms like poetry or visual media. These different sources keep my creativity well nourished! What’s one thing about you that your fans might not know but would be surprised to learn? I think my fans might be surprised to learn that I’m the author of a children’s picture book through a social enterprise I started years ago called Annie’s Pajammies! Where do you see your music going in the next few years? Are there any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon?
